History
Lion turtle

The history in the World of Avatar dates back many thousands of years and can be separated as the era before the Avatar and the era of the Avatar. All that is known is that before the Avatar’s incarnation, the elements were not yet divided and people bended energy within themselves.

In the era before the Avatar, we bent not the elements but the energy within ourselves.

At some point in this world’s history, people began bending the four elements and divided themselves into four nations. The Avatar also came into existence at this point.

In relation to the adventures of Team Avatar, the most important historical event was the Hundred Year War.

 

Historical System

BSC: Before Sozin’s Comet

ASC: After Sozin’s Comet

0 ASC marks the arrival of Sozin’s Comet to begin the Hundred Year War. 100 years later, the war ended. Events such as the birth of the most of characters in the series and the adventures of Team Avatar occur between 0 – 100 ASC.

From 100 ASC marks the end of the Hundred Year War and commence of the Harmony Restoration Movement. The years after 100 ASC include the adventures of Avatar Korra and her friends.

Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac is also included in this dating system. The Chinese calendar revolves around a cycle of twelve animals. The animals are listed below:

Rat 子 - Ox 丑 - Tiger 寅 - Hare 卯 - Dragon 辰 - Snake 巳 - Horse 午 - Sheep 未 - Monkey 申 - Rooster 酉 - Dog 戌 - Boar 亥

Planetarium calendar

The Planetarium calendar is the official dating system for the Avatar world. On the outside ring, traditional Chinese zodiac animals to identify a cycle of twelve years are used. Calligraphy expert, Dr. Siu-Leung Lee, came up with historically based names for sixteen eras in the Avatar world. The inner two rings of the calendar have numbers for the days of the month, followed by months of the year. Below the calendar are characters for spring equinox, summer solstice, autumn equinox, and winter solstice.

270 BSC Dog Avatar Kyoshi slays Chin the Great; founds Kyoshi Island. In Chin Village this day is remembered as Avatar Day.
270 BSC Dog A peasant uprising in Ba Sing Se results in Kyoshi creating the Dai Li.
82 BSC Horse Avatar Kyoshi dies at age 230.
82 BSC Horse Fire Lord Sozin and Avatar Roku are born.
66 BSC Dog Avatar Roku confirmed Avatar at age sixteen. He leaves the Fire Nation to master the elements.
58 BSC Horse After the death of his father, Fire Lord Sozin is crowned the new Fire Lord.
55 BSC Rooster While in the Avatar State during his training, Avatar Roku destroys Fire Temple on the winter solstice.
54 BSC Dog After 12 years of travelling and mastering the four elements, Roku returns to the Fire Nation and marries Ta Min.
50 BSC Tiger Guru Pathik is born.
37 BSC Rabbit A battle between Sozin and Roku occurs after Roku discovers the first Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom; Roku destroys part of the Fire Nation Royal Palace.
12 BSC Dragon At age 70, Avatar Roku is killed while fighting a volcanic eruption.
12 BSC Dragon Avatar Aang of the Air Nomads is born.
