Different regions of each nation hold respect to various spirits connected to the earth. The Air Nomads themselves are a spiritual people and live in harmony with nature.
The Moon (Tui) and Ocean (La) spirits dwell in The Spirit Oasis of the Northern Water Tribe. The Water Tribes’ belief of coexisting in peace stems from the relationship between these two spirits: Tui and La.
Small shrines on Kyoshi Island are dedicated to Avatar Kyoshi. The Earth King also has various ceremonial temples and a royal shrine. In Sandbender lore, the Si Wong Rock was dropped from heaven by the gods as a display of strength when their people stopped obeying the priests.
In the Fire Nation, spiritual beliefs aren't strong or practised. Nonetheless, in a few poor villages of the Fire Nation, Painted Lady of the Jang Hui river is highly revered as a spirit who heals the sick. The sages of the Fire Nation served the Avatar and protected Roku's temple.
The Spirit World
![]()
The spirit world is inhabited by various spiritual creatures who act as guardians of the forests, rivers and mountains. The spirits of the Avatar lineage are alive within the spirit world and watch over the current Avatar. An Avatar on earth may contact their predecessors during a solstice or when he/she enters the spirit world.
Rules of the Spirit World
![]()
When a bender is in the spirit world, he is still able to observe the physical world, but no one can see or him or she. If someone or something were to disturb his or her body in the spiritual world, his or her spirit might not find its way back.
Bending in the Spirit World
![]()
Once someone enters the spirit world, the ability to bend is not possible. The spirit world has no physical form, so, therefore, a bender cannot manipulate any of the four elements.
